What’s the Difference Between Marketing Campaigns and Advertising Campaigns?

Both marketing campaigns and advertising campaigns can be beneficial in helping you grow your brand, however, they are composed of different elements. Understanding the differences will help you know when to utilize the right one to maximize your desired results. Let’s look at the characteristics of each.

Marketing Campaigns:

A marketing campaign is a broader approach to bring awareness to your brand. This includes promoting your brand, product, or services through different channels such as social media, television, in-person events, email campaigns, product demonstrations or seminars, and billboards. While these campaigns can implement advertisements or advertising campaigns they are not completely reliant on it and it is a combination of organic and paid activities. Brands may focus more on tracking KPIs and doing market research, to find what areas they are excelling in and which may need greater amounts of focus. Marketing campaigns may have the goal of lead generation, new customer acquisition, cross-selling products and services, brand recognition, specific product launches, or customer retention.

Advertising Campaigns:

An advertising campaign focuses on utilizing strategies to communicate your products and/or services that you offer to your audience. Brands may experiment with different strategies to see which has the best outcome. Advertisement campaigns involve great amounts of creative production to create advertisements such as TV commercials or social media posts. There are a variety of types of advertisements that you can utilize such as digital or print ads. The type that you choose should align with your brand image and audience preferences. Advertising campaigns are useful for achieving goals such as attracting first time buyers, tracking ROI, and boosting brand image.

Which one is right for my business?

When deciding what campaign to use for your business it is important to take your goals into consideration. If you are looking to learn more about your audience and your market or connect with a new audience or market, you may want to opt for a marketing campaign. But if you’re solely looking to promote a new product, an advertisement campaign would likely be the better option.
